RED MEAT
With every day that goes by, more and more people are choosing to cut red meat out of their diet, or at least eat less of it.
This is not surprising given the terrible quality of beef that is readily available. With the rise of globalized industry, the freshness and quality of beef as well as other produce has gone down.
It is proven that in the US, a steak purchased today at a grocery store comes from a cow that was killed and butchered over a year ago.
That steak was cut, frozen, transported across the country, arrived at a warehouse where it was frozen once more, got transported to your local grocery, painted red to give a false appearance of freshness and finally (after months and months) you were able to purchase this steak only to take it home and feed it lovingly to your spouse and children.
And what nutritional value could you and your family have possibly gotten from that old piece of meat? None! If anything, you ate some cholesterol and hormones.
Red meat isn’t necessarily bad when it’s fresh. In fact fresh meat provides many necessary nutrients such as protein, iron and certain enzymes.
The problem with red meat today is that it’s prepared in certain ways that make it harmful for our health. One of these factors is the diet that meat cows are fed. Nowadays cow farms focus on quantity instead of quality and because of this, they give their cows a special feed made of cement mix and other cow remains, amongst other things. Yet as you surely know, the regular diet of a cow is grass!
This ‘food’ makes the cow obese which creates more income for the farmer and the end result is a giant piece of steak that shrivels to half its size once its cooked, much like bacon.
But if that wasn’t bad enough, these cows are also given certain types of hormones that accelerate their growth and antibiotics to keep them relatively healthy despite the cramped living conditions and terrible diet.
The worst part is that those hormones and antibiotics don’t disappear when you cook the meat and they end up getting stored in your body, only to cause harm in the long run.
There is really only two solutions:
The first one (and the cheapest) is avoiding red meat as much as possible. The second option is buying non hormone, free range, grain fed meat. Free range means the cow was raised on a pasture instead of a cramped stable, which means the steak will have more meat and less fat. Grain fed means the cow was fed an organic diet that is healthy for the cow. Dinner is served!
